Aussie Teacher Jailed in the Philippines for Child Abuse
A 45-year-old Aussie, who had reportedly worked as a teacher at schools in Australia, New Zealand and China was arrested on Friday evening at a beach resort in Compostela town, North Cebu, Philippines as part of a police operation, the AFP reports.
In much detailed report from Inquirer News, a local newspaper online, the Australian man was identified as Hilton Munro, though he had no passport or identification card with him.
According to the report he was arrested with five Cebuano boys on a Friday night in Stakili Resort following days of surveillance. The boys were ages 14 and 10 to 13 years-old. The 14-year-old-boy acted as Mr Munro's recruiter of minors whom Mr Munro photographed naked and then sexually abused.
According to reports from the surveillance, Mr Munro had been traveling around the provinces of Cebu, reaching as far as Bantayan and Borbon twons in the far northern part of Cebu. Mr Munro had been transferring from one resort to another.
Mr Munro was charged of violating the Philippines Anti-Human Trafficking in Persons Act or Republic Act 9208 along with his driver from Mabolo, Cebu City, identified as Gilbert Andrada. Three of his mobile phones were already in the police custody for extracting messages, photos or videos that can be helpful to the investigation. He will also be charged for child abuse or violation of republic Act 7610.
Journalist from Inquirer News was able to interview Mr Munro inside his jail cell.
According to Mr Munro he was innocent of the accusations and that "the kids were my friends who were contacted by another friend here in Cebu."
After telling that he was a professor in Australia and his wife also a teacher in a school in Hong Kong, he then refused to answer further questions.
The boys rescued were now under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
According to Inspector Sheryl bautista, deputy chief of the Regional Anti-Human Trafficking Task force, the boys who were rescued from Mr. Munro admitted that they were being paid Php500 ($12) to Php 1000 ($25) during their visits.
"According to the rescued minors, the suspect would take nude photos of them and have sexual relations with them," Ms Bautista said
Mr Andrada, taxi driver for Mr Munro and is also facing charges, told police that he knew Mr Munro because he became a passenger of his cab. Mr Munro asked for his phone number and promised to pay him a visit or call the next time he visited Cebu.
On July 5, Mr Andrda drove Mr Munro and his wife from the local airport in Cebu to Radisson Blu in Cebu city.
Mr Andrada shared that Mr. Munro and his wife were typical tourists whom rented a private vehicle and visit places like El Salvador beach resort, Alegre Beach resort and Carmen town and Bantayan Island.
The wife then made a stopover in Coco Palm Beach while Mr Munro proceeded to Stakili resort where he was arrested. Mr Andrada said that he knew nothing of what Mr Munro was doing not until the minors told them that they were being photographed and had them perform sexual acts.
