Former Tasmania seamer Allister de Winter has been appointed Australia's bowling coach for the limited-overs tour of the United Kingdom, which will feature five ODIs against England and one against Ireland, later this year.

The 44-year-old de Winter steps into the role in the wake of Craig McDermott's resignation last month and is the frontrunner to take on the position full-time despite former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis' candidacy.

Ex-Australian seamers Andy Bichel and Damien Fleming have already ruled themselves out of contention.

Currently employed as Tasmania's assistant coach and head coach of the Hobart Hurricanes in the Twenty20 Big Bash League, de Winter has toured with the national team before. He was on the 2009 visit to South Africa as part of a Cricket Australia coaching development programme.

Australia's 14-man squad for the June-July tour boasts seven seamers, including Mitchell Johnson and Pat Cummins, who have recovered from injuries incurred late last year. Brett Lee, Clint McKay, James Pattinson, Shane Watson Hilfenhaus are the other five.

The tour gets underway with a one-day fixture against Leicestershire at Grace Road on 21 June and will be followed by the one-off clash against the Irish two days later.
