Barry O'Farrell, NSW Premier, announced that the fire crisis in NSW "hasn't gone away" and that residents should remain cautious and vigilant of their properties and surroundings.

"There are in the order of 130 or 140 fires across the state and 30 uncontained at this stage, so the effort is going to continue," he told reporters while on a visit to Bookham, a small village in the Yass Shire, on Wednesday morning.

"We don't want people arguing with the emergency services."

"If you're told to do something, get on and do it."

An estimated 10,000 sheep had been lost in the fire in the Yass Valley, which currently is "still alive" and threatening homes. The lost translated to $1 million of losses to farmers.

Around 1700 firefighters worked through the night to put in containment lines.

Authorities from the local NSW police as well as the rural fire service have alerted residents that the fire currently raging in the Kybeyan Valley, west of Tuross River Road may move towards the Dangelong, Numeralla and Countegany areas throughout Wednesday, despite earlier forecast of cooler weather conditions for the state.

"Certainly it's going to be cooler ... however there is no rain in site," Joel Kursawe, RFS spokesman, said. "We are going to take advantage of some milder weather conditions but we are certainly not out of the woods."

As of 9.30am (AEDT) on Wednesday, firefighters were trying to manage 141 fires all across NSW, 31 of which were still uncontained.

Although fire conditions have moved from "catastrophic" to severe, very high or high, Mr Kursawe said they will continue monitor sites and battle out ongoing blazes, moreso that a lot of the fires were triggered by lightning.

"We don't need new fires today," Rob Rogers, RFS Deputy Commissioner, said on Wednesday morning.

But "we can nearly definitely say that we are going to see more fires start this week," Mr Kursawe said.
