Australia gears up law enforcement, counter spy measures
To combat the threat of terrorism and crime, the Australian Parliament has decided to boost the budget of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.
Australia plans to increase its government allocated budget for national security and anti-terrorism efforts by doubling the funds given to national security law enforcement agencies, reports said.
According to Bloomberg quoting a report from the Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian Parliament is now considering amendments to the law of national security enforcement
The report said that law alternations would, on the other hand, take place to combat terrorism and other threats to national security.
Australia will boost wiretapping powers and increase intelligence sharing between the nation's law-enforcement agencies to fight terrorism and other threats to national security, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
Changes to laws will allow state police forces and other crime agencies to use the agency's wiretapping technology, the newspaper reported. The amendments to the Telecommunications Interception and Access Act introduced to parliament will also allow ASIO to share more information with the Defence Signals Directorate, the Australian Secret Intelligence Service and the Defence Imagery and Geospatial Organisation, the Herald said.
