Investigators work at the site of a blast on a trolleybus in Volgograd December 30, 2013.

Australian athletes may be asked not to travel to the Sochi Winter Olympics to be held in February, according to Julie Bishop.

Julie Bishop gave an exclusive interview to The Australian as she revealed possibilities of Australia pulling themselves out of the Sochi Winter Olympics due to security issues. The athletes may be asked not to travel to Russia as the national security has apparently been compromised in the country after a couple of bomb blasts had taken place within 24 hours in Volgograd.

Russia seems to be on slippery grounds after it suffered one bomb blast after another in the same city. Russian President Vladimir Putin has already ordered the national security to be heightened further.

The first blast took place on Sunday December 29 around 1 pm. The woman detonated a shrapnel-filled bomb when she had to pass a metal detector at the station entrance, Reuters reports. The second blast took place on December 30 on a trolleybus packed with commuters. There was hardly anything left of the trolleybus after the bus as the blast left at least 14 people killed.

Moscow has justifiably understood the sensitivity of the situation just before the Winter Olympics kicks off February 7, 2014. The Russian government has asked for international solidarity.

The Chechen leader of insurgents published a video in July 2013, claiming an Islamic state out of the southern provinces of Volgograd which has a majority of Muslim population. He asked the militants to apply "maximum force" so that the Sochi Winter Olympics does not take place.

Australia's apprehension regarding the security of their players is justified as the situation really looks tense at the moment. According to Dmitry Trenin, an anti-terrorism expert with the Moscow Carnegie Centre, more attacks are expected as the Volgograd terrorists want to terrorise the world so that they do not take part in the Olympics.

Why Volgograd, which was previously known as Stalingrad, has become a target of the terror attacks is yet to be known.
