Australia was sent out of the T20 World Cup in a fashion that might haunt the team for a while. Australia was shamelessly thrashed by India as it finished 73 runs behind India's score, while it was all out failing to play for the complete quota of 20 overs.

It was a huge setback for Australia as a 73-run defeat is considered to be massive in Twenty-Twenty cricket. This was the third consecutive defeat by Australia in the tournament as it earlier failed it register victory against Pakistan and the West Indies. When Australia went to the field against India, it was already out of the tournament after Pakistan had defeated Bangladesh in the earlier match.

Australia could still have restored dignity on the field against India. It had to score 160 to win. However, the Australian team ended with a depressing score of 86 all out. The most shocking part of the Australian batting performance was that the batsmen continued to slog instead of building a partnership which could have been crucial in the situation.

Indian leg-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took 4 wickets for just 11 runs, while other spin-bowlers did not allow any Aussie batsman to perform. The top score came from Maxwell who also got out in an unimpressive fashion after scoring 23. The last five batsmen of Australia got out, adding merely 31 runs to the scoreboard. On the other hand, India got back its champion cricketer Yuvraj Singh back in form. When India was struggling at 66 for 4, he hit 9 boundaries and 2 over-boundaries to score 60 off 43 balls. It was the 84-run partnership with his captain MS Dhoni that salvaged India to 159.

Aussie captain George Bailey called it the "most disappointing game" by the team under his captaincy, The Australian reported. Australia will have its only chance of securing a win in the tournament when it faces Bangladesh in its next match. While both the teams are already out of the tournament, it will be a clash to regain self-respect. India, on the other hand, will face South Africa in the semifinal.
