Australian Born '96 Girls Target Squad Announced for 2013 Tour
Head coach Jack Lusic has identified Australia's generation next water polo players in an extended girls' born '96 target squad to tour Europe next year.
A total of 66 players have been selected to participate in a series of training sessions, before a squad of 15 will be announced for the August 2013 tour.
The players have been earmarked based on their performances at the 2012 Pan Pacs Youth Festival in New Zealand and the recent 16 & under national club championships in Brisbane.
Lusic said the level of water polo in the age group had been very impressive and believed next year's tour to Europe would be instrumental in the girls' growth and development.
"Next year's tour will be a really good reality check for the girls as the Europeans will be at full strength and fitness due to the fact that they will be attending the European championships after our visit," Lusic said.
"This should give us some idea of where we are at, in terms of our ability, fitness and skill level, and hopefully it will help us in our preparation for the 2014 FINA World Youth Championships."
Lusic has named an additional 40 players to join the 26 that participated at the Pan Pacs Festival in July and said the extra competition would be great for the girls.
"Whilst all twenty-six from the Pan Pacs have been retained, invitations have been extended to another 40 players who have showed great improvement and potential," he said.
"We will hold camps in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia between February and April next year and from these camps a squad of three goalkeepers and twelve field players will be selected for Europe.
"At this stage we are hoping to compete against Italy, Hungary and the Netherlands and hopefully the girls can really test each other for a place on this tour."
Times and dates are yet to be confirmed for the training camps and the European tour.
