On Australia's Boxing Day holiday, it certainly is a busy day in cinemas where various films are shown for movie aficionados. For 2012, film director Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" is anticipated to dominate the Australian box office and beat "Les Miserables" on the top spot.

Kirk Edwards, Chief Executive of Village Cinemas, thinks that this year's released films are already coursing their way in revealing the biggest box office results during the Christmas season.

"The magic of the movies is still alive. There has been unprecedented demand for tickets to see The Hobbit, Les Mis and all the other major blockbusters," Edwards affirmed.

"Les Miserables" has attracted a fair audience last week due to the appearance of Australian actor Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe at its red carpet premiere in Sydney, Australia. However, "The Hobbit" could still topple the movie adaptation of the stage musical.

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" successfully topped the box office movie charts in New Zealand, United States as well as Europe upon its release in cinemas.

"We're expecting it to be the biggest opening of the year," Samantha Philp, the national film promotions and partnership manager for Birch Carroll & Coyle Cinemas, stated.

In the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia (MPDAA) report, Peter Jackson's "Lord of The Rings" trilogy films still rule in the top spots of Australia's Top 10 All-Time Boxing Day box office. Lori Flekser, MPDAA General Manager, declared that the film's release could exceed last year's box office results.

"The initial results in other markets and the previous success of The Lord of the Rings movies in Australia strongly suggest that The Hobbit will out-perform last year's No. 1 movie, The Adventures of Tin Tin," Flekser said.

Also, Lori Flekser revealed that the year to date box office results is better to some extent compared to 2011. "The year has been benefitting from a tremendous mix of commercial and highly entertaining movies and consumers continue to demonstrate strong support for the timeless and unique appeal of going to the cinema," Flekser stated.

Meanwhile, Birch Carroll & Coyle Cinemas anticipates staying eventful throughout the summer. "When you've got things like The Hunger Games and The Avengers and the end of the Twilight era, 2012 has been fantastic. We've got high hopes for 2013," Samantha Philp said.
