Australian castaway rescued by TV crew shooting ‘River Monsters’ [VIDEO]
A man stranded on a remote Australian island has been saved by a TV crew shooting in the area. American cable show “River Monsters” host Jeremy Wade and the crew were filming on a largely deserted island when they spotted the castaway.
Director Stephen Shearman told “Inside Edition” that the crew were supposed to film on another side of the island but the waters at the location were too choppy. Hence, they transferred to that part of the island and saw a cooler box sitting on the rock.
Suddenly, “this guy with no clothes was running out of the cave, waving his arms out,” Shearman said. They later learnt that the man’s name is Tremine and that he came to the island in search of better oysters. He is a roofer from Borroloola and is an experienced hobby fisherman. However, he was separated from his boat while digging for oysters.
“He had tried to walk back, got beaten by the sun, and made his way back to the beach,” the director said. “Meanwhile, he had suffered from sunstroke and was unable to go any further. He then spent that first night on the beach, and the next morning he tried again, but the sun had gotten to be too much for him, and at this point, he is now trapped.”
Tremine had been stranded on the island without supplies for about 60 hours. As Shearman noted, the human body can only survive for up to 72 hours without water. Half a day more on the island without water could be fatal for Tremine.
“In his own words, he was ‘preparing to die,’” Shearman continued.
The crew immediately gave him water and hydration pills upon seeing him. Without nutrition for days, his body wasn’t ready for the pills, however, and had promptly threw them up. Since the rescue in November, the TV crew has been in touch with the castaway. He suffered from “bruised pride,” though he is back to normal now.
Tremine’s life perspective had changed as well. He promised to be more cautious in the wilderness, and he has also vowed to God he would start smoking again. He gave up smoking in the past, but that’s going to change as well. It’s for a practical reason, though.
“If he had a lighter, he’d be able to cook, and he’d have a fire,” Shearman told the entertainment site.
