Australian Defence Force Academy Dragged in Another Controversy
This time, the issue involves around 20 cadets and naval officer cadets or midshipmen of the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) exhibiting "drunken stupidity" and "quasi-initiation" rituals during the weekend at and near a nightspot in Canberra, where the academy is located. The bad behaviours, which were brought to the attention of the higher ups by certain cadets last Monday, are believed to have been practiced for "less than a year" already.
Seven have been suspended as a result of such misconduct pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation to the incident. Others may soon be added to the list of cadets exhibiting behaviours which are "contrary to the values and standards expected of ADF members and our future leaders," stressed Vice Chief of Defence Force Air Marshal Mark Binskin in a press conference.
"People who exhibit unacceptable conduct need to understand their actions will have consequences and we will not tolerate what is alleged to have happened here," he was also quoted as saying.
Air Marshal Binskin did not provide any further information about the recent scandal though. He only said, as reports have it, that the use of alcohol could have played a role in the incident. Also, he also maintained that as far as he knows, there are no victims.
A source likewise claimed that this time, sex, women, violence or police did not play a part.
Then again, another member of the defence force expressed his strong disapproval of the staff's behaviour.
"There is absolutely no place in the ADF for those personnel who continue to act in a manner contrary to the core values of the ADF and in the face of the reform already underway," emphasised opposition defence personnel spokesperson Stuart Robert in a quoted statement from reports.
Not so long ago, members of the academy were probed for allegedly committing the production and distribution of malicious contents including filmed sexual activities.
In addition to that, there is the so-called 'Skype scandal' of 2011. It is about a male cadet who filmed and streamed his sexual act with a female cadet. The latter was not aware that their private encounter is being viewed by the former's mates staying at a room close by.
