Australian Family Claims Guinness World Record By Lighting Up More Than Half A Million Christmas Lights For Charity
Lights are a big part of Christmas aside from gifts, cakes, wine, Christmas tree and more. With these, a family from Canberra, Australia has shattered a Guinness World Record by lighting up more than half a million Christmas lights for charity.
David Richards and his family have reclaimed the world record for decking up their house with precisely 502,1625 bulbs as Christmas lights. He is a barrister from Canberra who won the title for the second time, with a string of lights which extend up to 31 miles when stretched end to end.
He first won the prestigious title in 2011 when he illuminated his residence with 331,038 Christmas lights. His record was then broken by a family in New York lighting up some 346,283 bulbs at their La Grangeville residence in 2012. Refusing to give up on the title, the family worked toward installing more than half a million Christmas lights, along with multicolored streamers, candy canes, reindeer and other decorations for the big holiday for the noble cause of raising funds for SIDS & Kids ACT, as reported by Canberra Times. The children's charity works to fight sudden infant death syndrome.
"The charity is very close to our heart. We lost a child and SIDS looked after us many years ago," David Richards, who set the Guinness World Record for lighting up the most Christmas lights this year, said.
Richards is a parent to three kids: Aidan, 13, Caitlin, 10 and Madelyn, 6 with his wife Janean. As he reported, he has garnered enormous support by his neighbors, family and friends. But he has also admitted that some of his neighbors have not spoken to the family since they claimed their first world record in 2011.
"I have always loved Christmas. Having the Christmas lights with the community coming in and sharing it is a time when you get to know people you probably should know better, I guess," Richards said while speaking about reclaiming Guinness World Record.
In 2011, the immense effort of installing multithousand Christmas lights helped them raise $77,000, but this year they aim to raise $100,000.
"It actually helps a lot of families who have put up with an amazing amount of grief. That makes it all worthwhile to me," Richards told Canberra Times.
"It was very important for us. Anyone who has been through that sort of loss will probably tell you the worst thing that can happen to you is losing a young child," he added while discussing about the cause.
"It's like a party in your driveway every night," he noted.
People can start visiting Richards' residence from Nov. 30 to Dec. 26 at 3 Tennyson Crescent, Forrest. The entry to witness the man-made spectacle is by donating a gold coin.
Aside from this noble cause, another motivation to put such effort that earned this Australian family Guinness World Record for lighting up more than half a million Christmas lights is to provide a magical wedding venue to Richards' cousin Luana Marriott. She got married at Richards' Canberra residence with only white lights turned on.
