Ms Ali told her family that she was going to Denmark for doing humanitarian work after spending some leisure time with friends. In reality, she left her Sydney home to head to Syria to join her husband who was already there. Ms Ali's family only came to know about it when they were informed about the death of their daughter as well as their son-in-law. Mr Mohamad Karroum, Ms Ali's father, suffered a heart attack after knowing about his daughter/s assassination.

The people responsible for their death are supposed to belong to the Free Syrian Army that is fighting against the rebel groups that are trying to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Ms Ali's family is still not able to digest that she went to Syria when she said that she was going to Copenhagen. It was assumed that her husband would meet her in Copenhagen itself.

Ms Ali was born a Muslim just like her sister and father. Her mother, on the contrary, is a Christian. She had her education at St Hilda's school as it was the best education possible, informed her stepbrother Karl Karroum. News.com.au reports that Ms Ali did not wear any niqab or burqa until recently. Mr Karroum said that wearing the traditional Islamic clothes was a result of her understanding of the religion after she became mature.

Even though Ms Ali's stepbrother claimed that he did not have any idea if she got involved in the rebellious activities in Syria, media agencies like The Australian has already called her a "Muslim jihadist." Her husband Yusuf Ali was also suspected to have jihadist inclination when he informed his colleagues about his plans to go to Syria.
