‘Avatar 2’ update: James Cameron struggling hard to recreate the magic of ‘Avatar’ in its sequel
Canadian filmmaker James Cameron is busy with his upcoming project “Avatar 2” these days and the filmmaker aims to prove that the sequel was not just a “big fluke.”
The first part of the franchise released in 2009 was a huge hit as it managed to rake in $2.8 billion (AU$3.8 billion), according to Box Office Mojo. Despite achieving success in the first part, Cameron is finding the sequel to be quite challenging. "Avatar" landed into several hassles in its production days owing to its technological demands, cost over-runs and production delays. However, the flick somehow managed to see the light of day and went on to become the biggest hit of the year.
Cameron is experiencing a déjà vu moment amidst the production of “Avatar 2.”
"I’m in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now. Just refining. That’s in parallel with the design process. The design process is very mature at this point. We’ve been designing for about a year and a half. All the characters, settings and creatures are all pretty much [set]," the ace filmmaker revealed during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
"We've got to deliver. I've created a nice rod for my own back, so they say," he added.
Cameron’s “Avatar” received nine Oscar nominations and went on to win the 82nd Academy Awards for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects. Cameron is now under the pressure of matching the standard of the first film in “Avatar 2.” The movie stars Zoe Saldana (Neytiri), Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang (Miles Quaritch).
“Avatar 2” is slated to hit the theaters in December 2017. “Avatar 3” is also lined up and has been scheduled for a December 2018 release, while, “Avatar 4” is expected to entertain the audience in 2019.
Before the “Avatar” series, James Cameron first tasted success with the science fiction action film "The Terminator" that was brought to the audience in 1984, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. He then went on to make other successful movies including "Aliens," "True Lies" and "Titanic."
