'The Avengers' Smashed U.S. Box Office History, Earning $200 Million on Opening Day
The six superheroes definitely have avenged their movie as it tops the list of the highest earning movies on an opening date.
Marvel's "The Avengers" have garnered approximately $200.3 million just a week after its opening date, beating "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2" which earned $169.2 million last year.
Over the weekend, a sum of $151.5 million was added from its overseas earnings tallying up to $441.5 million since it began showing in theaters internationally, a week earlier than the US premier.
Overall, adding up to its US gross earnings, the movie has impressively earned $641.8 million in just about a week and a half. If the movie holds its spot and when final weekend count is released on Monday, the movie will be the first to ever earn $200 million on a single weekend.
"There aren't even words, to be honest. I'm running low on double takes. Every time we looked at a number, it just got bigger than what we could have hoped for in the best-case assumption. With this film, this weekend, anything is possible," head of Disney distribution Dave Hollis said.
The success in the box office is a culmination of hard work and careful planning by the Marvel Studios, the cast and crew of the movie. It is directed by Joss Whedon with a stellar cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Hiddleston.
A $200 million weekend earnings for a movie is considered very good business and so "The Avengers" redefines what blockbuster debut looks like.
The superhero movie is just the start of two more to follow. "The Amazing Spiderman" is set for release on July 3 and "The Dark Knight Rises" which wraps up the current Batman series is set for July 20.
