Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow are expected to save the world once more for the sequel of this year's blockbuster hit - The Avengers.

Chief executive of Walt Disney, Bob Iger, announced that director Joss Whedon will be writing and directing the sequel. Walt Disney owned the film rights of the favorite Marvel superheroes.

The superhero movie, made by Disney's Marvel Entertainment subsidiary, is one of the biggest hits in modern Hollywood history, with global ticket sales in excess of $US1.46 billion.

The film's ticket sales of $US616.8 million in the US make it the third-highest-grossing film of all time, trailing behind James Cameron's films "Avatar" and "Titanic" in non-inflation-adjusted dollars.

Iger made the announcement in a conference call with analysts upon discussing Walt Disney's revenue for the third quarter. Thanks to the blockbuster hit release last spring, the media company's third-quarter earnings soared by 24 percent.

It seems that Walt Disney wants to keep the cash flowing by releasing another Avengers-themed film that will surely shake the movie houses worldwide.

He also said that Whedon is developing a Marvel-themed, live-action television series for US television network, ABC.

The Avengers sequel has not yet been dated, but Disney is already set to release two movies from Marvel Entertainment in 2014, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy, meaning the next Avengers film will most likely to be released in 2015.
