"Backstrom" hires Sarah Chalke of the "Scrubs" and "HIMYM" comedy fame. The upcoming FOX crime drama casts Chalke as the titular character's ex-fiancée. Fans are now wondering about lead star Rainn Wilson's chemistry with the comic actress. The series is expected to premiere in the spring of 2015.

Detective Everett Backstrom (Rainn Wilson) is an insufferable detective in the book series by Swedish Leif G. W. Persson. The TV adaptation is developed by Hart Hanson, the showrunner of another FOX crime series, "Bones."

Sarah Chalke is playing Amy Gazanian, a sharp contrast to her memorable comedic roles: Dr Elliott Reid ("Scrubs") and Stella Zinman ("How I Met Your Mother"). While on the subject, it must be noted that Rainn Wilson's Dwight Schrute is not a bit like Backstrom at all. These actors acting chops would be tested in many ways.

"A former social worker and journalist, Amy left Backstrom 10 years ago, largely due to the many flaws in his trauma-riddled character," TV Line reported.

"When we first began our search for this crucial character we all agreed that we needed someone like Sarah Chalke," exec producer Hart Hanson told TV Line in the same report. "Imagine our glee when we actually scored the person most like Sarah Chalke in the world - Sarah Chalke!"

Sarah was also in the short-lived "How to Live with Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life)."

Also starring in Backstrom are Genevieve Angelson as Detective Nicole Gravely, Page Kennedy as Officer Frank Moto, Kristoffer Polaha as Sgt. Peter Niedermayer, Dennis Haysbert as Detective John Almond, Beatrice Rosen as Nadia Chickikov, and Thomas Dekker as Gregory Valentine.

Backstrom was supposed to air on CBS, but the network already has "Criminal Minds" and "NCIS," among others. It also renewed "The Mentalist" for its seventh season.

"[Backstrom] centers on Detective EVERETT BACKSTROM (three-time Emmy Award nominee Rainn Wilson, "The Office"), an offensive, irascible detective, as he tries, and fails, to change his self-destructive behavior. Throughout the series, Backstrom leads his team, the Serious Crimes Unit, as they navigate Portland's most sensitive cases," reads the FOX press release on the series.

"In the pilot episode, after the apparent suicide of a Senator's son is ruled a homicide, the Portland Police Bureau's Serious Crime Unit, led by Detective Backstrom (Wilson) must solve the case," the press release reads further.
