Banks warn of bogus phone survey
The Australian Bankers' Association (ABA) is warning of a telephone survey scam which is using the ABA's name in an attempt to de-fraud bank customers.
According to ABA, the bogus survey telephone operator tells the person that they are completing a customer satisfaction survey and then asks a series of questions regarding the person's banking provider, such as: With whom do you bank? How long have you banked with them? Are you satisfied with the service?
The operator claims they are conducting the survey on behalf of the ABA.
Steven Münchenberg, Chief Executive of the ABA, said, "The ABA does not carry out customer satisfaction surveys. Two bank customers have alerted us to this so-called 'survey' and told us they terminated the call after becoming suspicious."
"We are concerned, however, that if the call had continued, the customer would have been asked for personal identification details for use by criminals."
Mr Münchenberg warned that this bogus survey is a repeat of a scam which criminals were running two months ago.
The ABA advises clients who receive a call such as this to just hang up. Those who have provided any information over the telephone, meanwhile, should also immediately contact their bank so this could take action to protect and monitor accounts.
