Bar in New Zealand Still Mulling If It Will Install Camera in Women’s Room (VIDEOS & PHOTOS)
Operators of the Dux Live bar in Christchurch, New Zealand is still studying if it will also place a camera in the women's room, following the controversy caused by its installation of surveillance camera in the men's room.
The bar is considering that measure since the women's room has more vandalism incidents than the men's room.
Ross Herrick, the general manager, insisted that the cameras are for security reason to catch vandals and are angled so that no nudity or genitals are captured.
However, academics are wary of the use of cameras in such places.
"When people are in bathrooms and changing rooms, they do things like zip up their trousers, and move away from the urinal towards the basin ... It's very risky to position the camera elsewhere. You might pick up information that would be highly intrusive," Newstalkzb quoted University of Canterbury Law professor Ursula Cheer.
In response to criticisms, Mr Herrick said, "We do not apologise for trying to simply look after our guests and friends as the same cameras some might complain about also have provided valuable information regarding assaults, theft and customer safety, often without our guests knowledge."
