Bateman might have to sit a few games down, says Hawks manager
Sad news for Hawthron Hawks fanatics - midfielder and veteran Chance Bateman, won't be appearing on near future games due to an injured ankle. Hawks manager, Mark Evans, confirms this unfortunate absence in a statement released today for ABC Melbourne.
"He's got a high-grade ankle sprain, so he's going to miss some weeks, maybe up to four or six", says Evans in the interview, who adds Bateman won't be playing for this week. Evans also talked about the medical attention Bateman had to seek, and that the scans revealed the damage. Bateman was pulled out during the first quarter of last Sunday's match against the Western Bulldogs.
Chance Bateman had just been appointed to veteran status in the team, meaning that he has got a lot to lose considering this is the most important time for the team. "It could be quicker than that (four to six weeks), but given we're right smack bang in the middle of the season, we'll respect that and he'll be ready when he's ready", adds the considerate Evans.
Bateman, who is the team's first Aboriginal life member to reach 100 games, has been riddled with numerous injuries all throughout his career. Picked at the 1999 AFL draft by the Hawks for his agility and small frame, Bateman became better and better as he bounces back to the field post-injury. The midfielder is famous for kicking the team's first goal in the 2008 Grand Final and for donating his dreadlocks to be auctioned off for charity that supports Aboriginal health. No confirmed date has been announced regarding Bateman's return.
