“Bates Motel” Season 3 premiered Mar. 9 on A&E Network. Norma Bates receives news about a death in the family, Norman gives in to his inner voyeur, and Dylan gets to talk to his father/uncle. This is the first episode in which Norman reports for duty as motel manager.

Spoiler alert: This review recaps the highlights of the premiere episode of “Bates Motel” Season 3.

Episode 1 of “Bates Motel” Season 3 reminds the viewers that Norman Bates is now 18 years old. It’s his first day as a high school senior. Due to some incidents, however, Norma decides her son should be homeschooled. At the same time, she promotes her son to motel manager.

Early in the episode, Norma Louise Bates learns her mother has died. She tries to not feel anything, but she becomes emotional in the end. She has no idea that her brother Caleb is in town, convincing their son Dylan to take some of grandma’s inheritance.

Emma’s lungs are getting much weaker. She shares the sad update with Norman, who responds by saying it is time for them to become an official couple. The first technical third party in their relationship is a prostitute named Annika.

“Bates Motel” Season 3 sees the promotion of Norman Bates to the post of motel manager. Annika is the first motel guest to draw out this manager’s inner voyeur. Norma catches Norman spying on their guest later in the episode.

There is little blood in “Bates Motel” Season 3, and it was only in Norman’s brief but eerie hallucination involving Miss Watson. The audience is left to wonder what happened next to Annika and Norman toward the end of the episode.

Norman Bates is sinking deeper into the dark in “Bates Motel” Season 3. His relationship with his mother has become more physical than ever. Juxtapose this to his relationship with Emma and his new episode of voyeurism, and a much darker, more twisted Norman is exposed.

The premiere episode of “Bates Motel” Season 3 succeeds in dropping hints of more madness in the world of Norman Bates. Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore are compelling as usual; so much so, that they do give the creeps in their inappropriate mother-and-son moments.
