Battle of the Smartwatches: Google, Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, and LG
Smartwatches seem to be one of the awaited devices that will come out, and already, the five giants in the industry have already hinted or confirmed their own take on the wearable technology.
Apple
The Apple iWatch was among the first that was announced when it comes to wearable technology for your wrist.
"We don't want the iWatch to be all about consumption, as many have labeled iPhone and iPad," said an Apple representative to TechCrunch. "So we'll be letting users attach their laptops to the band.
There have also been reports that the iWatch team may be releasing the device to the market even as early as sometime this year. According to the report, some of the iWatch features may include calls, check caller ID, map coordinates for direction, and health sensors and tracking.
Mirror adds that the device may have a 1.5-inch screen, and can be connected to other Apple devices.
Considering the timeline of the iPhone 5S or perhaps even the iPhone 6, it won't be a surprise if Apple find a way to integrate the iWatch into the equation.
Samsung
In perfect sync with its rival, Samsung has also confirmed that it will be dabbling with the smartwatch technology.
"We've been preparing the watch product for so long. We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them," said Samsung to Technorati.
There has not been any word on Samsung's smartwatch in terms of its features or when the release date will be. However, with all the added accessories that Samsung has recently released for its Samsung Galaxy S4, it might be a safe bet for the company to create a watch technology that would complement its newer phone.
This can mean that it won't be up for a 2013 release, but if its rival announces a reveal of its product, Samsung's version may not be far off.
With the shipment of the first batch of Google Glass Explorers already on the way, it might be a high time for Google to continue the work on its own version of the smartwatch.
Last month, Google was reported to be planning a smartwatch release of its own, after the two phone companies Apple and Samsung were reported to be working on smartwatches. The report adds that, so far, Google seems to be passing on the project o the Android unit to attain faster product roll-outs to the market.
NBC News reports that, in 2011, Google had filed a patent for a wearable device that aptly pertains to a smartwatch. It will have a tactile user interface, camera, and dual-screen display.
But Google has not yet commented on any confirmations about the amount of work that has been dedicated to the smartwatch.
Microsoft
It seems that Microsoft is the latest-and one of the last-to jump the bandwagon of the smartwatch battles.
According to Digital Trends, a report states that the company has just asked for shipping orders for a 1.5 touch screen.
Whether it's going to be in direct competition with the likes of Samsung and Apple, which will be a smartwatch accompaniment for future phones or if Microsoft will go by way of a companion for the Xbox 720, it's still unknown.
But if it's the latter, it's a wonder if Sony will be following its footsteps for its PS4? After all, Microsoft has already been rumored for an Xbox Mini for its current-gen compatible games. We'll keep a close watch on any developments for Microsoft's smartwatch.
LG
With LG, it seems that it has two projects in line, both of which are similar to what is slowly becoming a trend with wearable technology. According to NDTV Gadgets, LG is gearing up for both a smartwatch and a device similar to the Google Glass.
There has not been much confirmations or movements with LG, with the latest of its experiments, the LG GD910 being more of unsuccessful prototypes more than anything.
But given their breakthroughs in the past, including the flexible technology now rumored to be part of the iPhone 6 offering, it's not a surprising idea to find LG to be part of the smartwatch bandwagon.
