Former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie announced on Friday it will seek an early retirement by July as the state's Trade Commissioner to the Americas.

Mr. Beattie received the three-year posting two years ago, but said he will leave his post ten months early in July.

He assured that he will not leave his job undone until he has achieved all his tasks. He added that trade activity in Los Angeles office was achieved and its financial year will reach more than $462 million.

"It's two years tomorrow since I started, so I'll be finishing a bit early, but that gives the Government an opportunity to appoint someone else to carry on what's been done," he said.

Mr. Beattie added he hopes to live privately both in Australia and in the US.

He added that Premier Anna Bligh was already informed on his decision and his last public act will be his retirement announcement.

"So everyone can see there's nothing untoward here, but outside that, I'm looking forward to the anonymity of it all," he said.

On her part, Ms. Bligh has thanked Mr. Beattie for his services, adding that he has achieved a lot of work during his two-year stay on his post.

Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser also praised Mr. Beattie on his job as Trade Commissioner.

“I think Peter's made a huge contribution to public life,” Mr. Fraser said.

"I saw him in action in Latin America last month - I think in the immediate term you can say he's done a fantastic job over in the Americas.”
