Bench Play Lifts Toronto Raptors Past Los Angeles Clippers, 110-98
The Toronto Raptors were severely undermanned Saturday night that needed every contribution from the reserves to eke out a road victory against the Los Angeles Clippers and in the process, snapping the home team's 8-game win streak, 110-98. Coach Dwayne Casey got contributions from the unlikeliest places as the bench contributed 18 of the 30 fourth quarter points that secured the win for the Eastern Conference leading Raptors.
''That's the biggest thing about this team. We've got a great bench and we feed off of each other,'' backup guard Greivis Vasquez said per Yahoo Sports. ''It may not show in the stats, but a lot of different guys do a lot of different things. The second (unit) doesn't get as much credit as the starters, but we don't care.''
Still, the team had to rely early from its two best players in Kyle Lowry who had 25 points, 3 rebounds and 7 assists and Lithuanian player Jonas Valanciunas who added a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds while trying to muscle with the likes of Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. The Raptors came springy after a tied halftime score and beat the Clippers in the hustle department and off-the-bench scoring. Vasquez (16 points), Patrick Patterson (10 points, 2 threes made) and Lou Williams (9 points, 2 threes made) all made their impact in the final canto when the lone team from Canada outscored the reigning Pacific Division champions Clippers in the last quarter, 30-20.
The Clippers' loss halts an otherwise positive trend after the team dispatched of their rivals Golden State Warriors in impressive fashion during the Christmas day games. Griffin and JJ Redick led the way with 22 and 23 points respectively but got minimal contributions from arguably the best point guard in the game Chris Paul who had a measly 10 points and 8 assists. Jordan did his usual damage on the boards with 20 caroms but the rest of the support players did not show up with just four players getting into double figure scoring.
The Clippers will try to bounce back Monday when they continue their home stand against the Utaz Jazz while the Raptors, who are still missing key players DeMar Derozan and Landry Fields, will be needing the same grit from the bench when continue their Western Conference road trip at Denver.
