Benedict Cumberbatch Filming ‘Something Special’; Fans Hope It’s ‘Sherlock’ and ‘Doctor Who’ Crossover
Benedict Cumberbatch is working on a show, and fans hope it’s a “Sherlock” and “Doctor Who” crossover with Peter Capaldi.
On Wednesday, BBC One has posted teaser photos for an upcoming show for both BBC One and Two starring Cumberbatch. It only said the 38-year-old actor is “filming something special.” No other information was made available apart from two photos of Cumberbatch on screens.
Some fans thought it’s “Sherlock”-related, but as others quickly pointed out, Cumberbatch isn’t wearing his signature Sherlock curls on the photos, and therefore it’s unlikely the project is for the hit series. Also, the filming for the season four of the show doesn’t start until January.
Still, there are those who remain hopeful, thinking that it is a crossover special episode for “Doctor Who” and “Sherlock.” The possibility of which has already been crushed by “Sherlock” co-creator and “Doctor Who” exec producer Steven Moffat in a recent interview.
Although he is willing to do it, Moffat said Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Mark Gatiss and Sue Vertue were not amenable to the idea, adding that it’s “probably not going to happen.”
So if it’s not anything about “Sherlock,” then what is it? Some speculate that he is finally guest starring in “Doctor Who” as some character other than the famous eccentric detective. It’s not a crossover, but it’s second best to come out ever. There are also those who have not been hanging onto the idea of Cumberbatch going anywhere near the Tardis, guessing that it’s for the BBC charity Children in Need or the TV series “The Hollow Crown.”
Others were not so enthusiastic about the idea of Cumberbatch “filming something special” since they doubt it’s a full-length series. It might just be a brief interview with the actor, and the network already called it “special” just because his name was mentioned.
Cumberbatch is currently starring in the film “The Imitation Game,” a historical thriller about British mathematician Alan Turing. “Sherlock” will be airing its fourth series in 2016, two years after the third series aired.
