Bernard Tomic seeks to end his career-best season in style
Australia’s highest-ranked tennis player Bernard Tomic is guaranteed to climb two notches up to World No. 18 after reaching the third round of the 2015 Shanghai Rolex Masters, where he will play 11th seed Richard Gasquet of France. Currently at World No. 22, Tomic is guaranteed 90 points just by making it to the last 16 of the Shanghai tournament.
Tomic is buoyed by his chance at finishing the season in style, reported Fox Sports Australia. According to the 22-year-old, he feels very confident going into his third round match with Gasquet, who owns a 6-1 advantage against him. He is determined not to drop in the ATP world rankings during the Asian swing.
“I got into the top 20 the past few weeks,” Tomic said. “Now is a big chance to finish the year very close to the top 15, I have to work hard, this next match is an opportunity.”
Tomic said in a previous report that his goal was to finish in the Top 15 of the ATP World Rankings and the Aussie young gun is on course to achieving his year-end target with three more tournaments this year (Stockholm, Valencia, and season-ending Paris Masters). He is only five points behind Frenchman Gael Monfils (World No. 19) and 15 points behind Austrian Dominic Thiem, who has already been eliminated in Shanghai after bowing out to 15th seed Feliciano Lopez in the second round 6-7(4) 7-6(6) 6-3. Tomic’s guaranteed 90 points from Shanghai would leave him knocking out Monfils and Thiem when the new rankings are released.
Tomic is the first Australian since Lleyton Hewit to break into the top 20 of the world rankings. He achieved the World No. 20 rank after his defeat to Andy Murray during the Davis Cup semifinals.
The third round match between Tomic and Gasquet takes place at the Grandstand Court after Marin Cilic plays Stan Wawrinka. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will face Roger Federer’s conqueror Albert Ramos-Vinolas while Kei Nishikori, who beat Australia’s Nick Kyrgios takes on Kevin Anderson for a place in the final eight. All these matches will take place at the Grandstand Court.
