It seemed to be another tragic incident when a talented soul became a victim of drug overdose. The lifeless body of Philip Seymour Hoffman, best known by the younger generation as Plutarch Heavensbee in the movie "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," was found in his apartment in Manhattan.

Here is a tentative list of the best movies Hoffman worked in. All of them are a must watch for any movie enthusiast. He might not have played the most significant part in all these movies but these movies would not have been complete without his intense performances.

'Scent of a Woman' (1992)

He was credited as Philip S. Hoffman in this movie that is most famous for the leading "couple" - Al Pacino and Chris O'Donnell. Hoffman played the character of George Willis, Jr. a classmate of O'Donnell.

'Boogie Nights' (1997)

Hoffman, as Scotty J, received the Florida Film Critics Circle Award for Best Cast and was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. The movie was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.

'Flawless' (1999)

Hoffman acted in the film along with iconic actors like Robert De Niro. His portrayal of Rusty Zimmerman, someone who is unable to amass enough money to get a transsexual operation, won him several awards including the San Diego Film Critics Society Award for Best Actor and the Best Actor Award at the Verona Love Screens Film Festival. He was also nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.

'Magnolia' (1999)

Hoffman's portrayal of the caretaker Phil Parma won him the Chlotrudis and the National Board of Review awards for Best Supporting Actor. The movie also features Jeremy Blackman and Tom Cruise.

'Almost Famous' (2000)

The movie is probably most famous for seductress Kate Hudson had Hoffman as Lester Bangs, a rock journalist. He received the Online Film Critics Society Award for Best Supporting Actor and was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

'Capote' (2005)

This was probably the most successful movie of Hoffman who received the Academy Award for Best Actor, among many other awards. He played the title role in the biopic of Truman Capote. His role was highly acclaimed worldwide.

'Doubt' (2008)

This was an extremely intriguing movie where Hoffman worked alongside the iconic actress Meryl Streep. Hoffman, as Father Brendan Flynn, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, among many other major awards.

'The Master' (2012)

This movie got Hoffman his third nomination for the Academy Award. His portrayal of Lancaster Dodd won him several awards even though he missed several others in spite of being nominated in most of them. Hoffman's character leads a religious movement called "The Cause."
