The hefty discounts on Black Friday are deliberate, not whimsical decisions made by retailers on what they think would sell well.

A report by EDITD, a retail technology firm used by more than 10,000 US and UK subscribers, suggests several clothing items that retailers give a big discount because it would soon be out of fashion. By disposing of these soon-to-be outdated styles, stores maximise their profits and prevent having too much of certain styles on their stockrooms which if left too long would become stale and may force them to even slash its tag prices further.

The report notes that the steepest discounts on clothes are offered during Black Friday until Cyber Monday. The popularity of this weekend holiday to go on a shopping frenzy has made post-holiday January sale a "thing of the past" for both the US and UK markets.

It noted that "By January, the products that arrived in store in September are old news even for the sales section."

Here are the top 6 apparel that EDITD recommends should be heavily discounted and promoted for the Thanksgiving shopping frenzy. Wise shoppers be forewarned that being in the list means these items would soon be no longer fashionable.
