Beyonce’s ‘Ring Off’ Isn’t About Her Alleged Crumbling Marriage to Jay Z, But About Her Parents [VIDEOS]

Beyonce’s new song “Ring Off” isn’t about her alleged crumbling marriage to Jay Z, contrary to reports. The new leaked song, which is about letting go of a failed relationship following a partner’s apparent infidelity, is about her parents Tina and Matthew Knowles, who are divorced.

Snippets of “Ring Off” have recently been leaked, along with Beyonce’s other song “7/11.” While “7/11” looks to become another dance hit, “Ring Off” sounds more sentimental, albeit with a lively tone. Some suspected that it is about Beyonce and Jay Z’s marriage, which has been rumoured to be disintegrating for months now.

However, the lyrics of the song clearly suggest that it’s not her marriage that is being discussed, but rather her mother’s resilience amid the crumbling of her own marriage to Beyonce’s father, Matthew.

As Time reported, “Rig Off” isn’t about “intra-family strife, despite the fact its very title references ending a marriage. It’s a celebration of Tina Knowles’ newfound independence, telling her to put her ‘love on top,’ a witty reversal of Beyonce’s own song of the same title. The song ‘Love on Top,’ a fan favourite, is a celebration of prioritising marital love; Beyonce telling her mother ‘it’s your time to put your love on top’ is an encouragement to put herself and her own happiness first.”

The song begins with Beyonce addressing her “Mama,” telling the Tina that she understands what she did to become the perfect wife to Matthew.

“Mama, I understand your many sleepless nights / When you sit and think about Father / Or how you tried to be the perfect wife,” heard the songs’ opening lines. “You used to dress to fix your hair / And you smile through your tears / And in the mirror you would stare / And say your prayer / Like, ‘I wish he said I’m beautiful. I wish it didn’t hurt at all. I didn’t know how I got here, I was once one who had his heart.’ / Until you had enough and you took that ring off / You took that ring off.”

Tina and Matthew married in 1980. They had two daughters, Beyonce and Solange Knowles. However, they separated in 2009 amid reports of Matthew’s affair with actress Alexsandra Wright, who gave birth to Matthew’s son Nixon. Apart from his lovechild with Wright, Matthew also has a daughter with TaQoya Branscomb. Tina filed divorce from her husband, who is now married to another woman. Tina, on the other hand, is reportedly dating actor Richard Lawson.
