Big Apple, Big Problem: Carmelo Anthony Trade to Portland, Charlotte or Denver?
Rage Against the (Trade) Machine: Carmelo Anthony on the Block
With recent reports that star forward Carmelo Anthony is upset with the New York Knicks’ effort to start the 2013-2014 season, it’s time to explore the potential trades that can put Melo out of his misery at the Big Apple.
The Knicks suffered their fifth straight loss at the Madison Square Garden and dropped to a 3-6 win-loss card for the year— tied for 3rd worst in the laughable Eastern Conference with Saturday’s 110-90 embarrassing blowout loss to the Atlanta Hawks.
For the year, the Knicks are 1-5 at home and has an average margin of losses of 13.6 points at MSG.
"At the rate this is going, we're going to be in too deep of a hole to dig out," said Anthony to the team’s official website.
"We ain't playing worth a s--- right now," Anthony said. "We got to play harder,” added the disgruntled (non)superstar to ESPNNewYork.com.
So really, the 29-year-old has a point for being upset. And just like in Denver, we expect Melo to quit on this New York team, demand a trade to a new one. Rinse and repeat, just like he did with the Nuggets.
Time for a rage against the (trade) machine, courtesy of ESPN’s fantasy tool for fictitious but fun exchanges:
Trade #1: New York Knicks – Charlotte Bobcats
Carmelo Anthony for SG Ben Gordon, PG Ramon Sessions, SF Michael Kidd-Gilchrist + 2014 First Rounder
Why Should the Knicks Do It: New York is selling low on Anthony in this one but it’s a nice restart for what is a failing Knicks project. Gordon’s salary of $13.2M is an expiring contract as well Session’s $5M. MKG has four years left but is at a bargain with just around $23M owed even if all the team/player options are picked up.
They shed off Melo’s salary ($44M next two years) and get a nice prospect back since Melo has a player option in 2014-2015. The 2014 Charlotte first-rounder is a sweetener too—this can be the Portland or Detroit pick and they can give whichever is higher to entice New York of another future prospect.
Why Should the Bobcats Do It: Charlotte is serious in their bid for a playoff spot this season with the offseason acquisition of big man Al Jefferson. Acquiring Melo will mean adding another star that can complement Jefferson’s inside game. The Bobcats are 29th (89.2 PPG) in the NBA in scoring. With Melo’s 25.8 PPG average (4th in the NBA), Charlotte will definitely benefit from Melo’s isoball offensive prowess.
Trade #2: New York Knicks – Portland Trail Blazers
Carmelo Anthony for SF Nicolas Batum, C Joel Freeland, C Meyers Leonard
Why Should the Knicks Do It: They get a Nicolas Batum, who is not a superstar of Melo’s level but is a good starting core for their rebuilding mode. The Knicks won’t immediately improve this season but Batum has a friendlier contract ($11M/year) but has him locked down for three seasons. They won’t risk losing Melo for nothing and the fillers in Freeland and Leonard can be a good prospect with an ageing frontline.
Why Should the Blazers Do It: This move will send a simple message to current main man LaMarcus Aldridge: “We’re pairing you with another superstar in Carmelo Anthony; we’re serious about our contender status goal and we hope you stay with us when your contract expires.”
Trade #3: New York Knicks – Denver Nuggets Trade
Carmelo Anthony for SF Wilson Chandler, PG Andre Miller, PF Darrell Arthur, SF Anthony Randolph, SF Jordan Hamilton
Why Should the Knicks Do It: There’s no rhyme and reason here, this move is to really just piss off Melo.
Why Should the Nuggets Do It: We don’t know either but if the goal is to piss off Melo then the Nuggets front office is on board.
