‘Big Brother Australia’ Ex-Housemate Ben Zabel Overdoses on Prescription Drugs, Recovering at Home
Former “Big Brother Australia” housemate Ben Zabel has overdosed on prescription drugs over the weekend. The fan favourite of the 2013 series was treated by paramedics at his Brisbane apartment, and was later sent to the hospital.
As News Corp reported, the 32-year-old former flight attendant had “overdosed on a variety of medications late Saturday night, and was rushed to the hospital to be treated.”
The genteel movie fanatic was apparently seen by Mental Health on Sunday. He was released the same day in the afternoon, and is now “quietly recovering” at home.
It was not mentioned what medicines he was taking during that time, though his concerned fans speculated that he was suffering from depression once again. He has previously opened up about his struggle with anxiety and depression when he was let go by Virgin Australia for being not “fit to fly.” His Instagram post also included the hashtags #depression, #anxiety and #overdose, which perhaps confirmed the speculations.
“As Mark Twain once said – ‘Reports of my dearth have been greatly exaggerated.’ Thank you to all the staff at Royal Brisbane ☺#depression #anxiety #overdose,” Ben wrote on Instagram., attaching a photo of his hospital wristband.
“On Saturday evening (15th November) Ben Zabel suffered a drug overdose. He was treated by paramedics on the scene in his apartment and was later transported to The Royal Brisbane Hospital for further treatment. Ben was released from hospital late yesterday afternoon and asks for privacy at this time,” his publicist Jeremy Hansen said.
Ben was the favourite to win the 2013 series of the Channel Nine reality show, but was evicted on Day 73, to the shock of the viewers who had thought he was safe. He was jobless by the time he entered the house. In July, he revealed the reason why he was dismissed by Virgin Australia, where he worked as a flight steward for years.
“I use to just make a joke and & fob the question away, as I was too embarrassed to admit, anxiety & depression got the better of me in my workplace. I then felt like I was lying to myself & lying to all of you by not telling you the full story,” he wrote on Facebook.
Ben is set to star in his debut show “Ben From Brisbane, A Quiet Night In” on December 7 to 11 at The Brisbane Powerhouse. He is also a regular on “Mornings,” hosting his Ben’s Movie Wrap.
