An Indian young man, presumably bitter for not being able to carry on his rape plans against the girl object of his desire, had set her on fire instead with kerosene over the weekend. But apparently, there is more than meets the eye to the tragic incident. The family of the victim claimed the man was also avenging the terminated wedding engagement of his older brother to the victim's older sister.

Mintu Pal, 22 years old, reportedly went to the house of unidentified 16-year-old girl object of his affection on Friday. The young girl happened to be alone in the house at that time in India's Bijnore district, while Mintu came along with two other companions.

When the girl was able to thwart the rape attempt by raising an alarm, her family alleged Mintu and his companies drenched her with kerosene and immediately lit her up in fire. It is not clear if it was Mintu who brought the container of kerosene.

By the time authorities had arrived at the scene, the girl had already over 90 per cent burns all over her body. She later died in a district hospital.

Local media agencies said the elder siblings of Mintu and the girl used to be a couple who were already engaged to be married. But the relationship fell off, so did the supposed harmonious relations between the two families.

It was at this time that Mintu started befriending the young girl. But the girl's mother learned of their friendship and ordered her daughter to cut it.

The victim's mother, according to police authorities, alleged the accused wanted to rape her daughter to avenge the family's decision of withdrawing the marriage of the victim's elder sister with his brother.
