'The Blacklist' works to a large extent because of the personal mystery surrounding each of the principal character, and we never know what may spring-up and shock us. We probably are inching closer to finding why Liz's husband, Tom (Ryan Eggold), is hiding the passports, cash and a gun in a box under the floorboard.

In the fifth episode of "The Blacklist," "The Courier," Liz gets a nightmare of Tom choking her after she demands to know if he knew about a murder that took place at Angel Station Hotel.

Red (James Spader) tells Liz about "The Courier" who is this episode's most wanted name in the blacklist of Red. The information is shared only after Liz tells Red what she knows about Tom. She does not hide that they (Liz and Tom) were at Angel Station Hotel, a few years ago, when a Russian was murdered at the hotel.

Red finds Liz's honesty refreshing and says, "Thank you for being honest with me. In my life I don't encounter that frequently."

The Courier's parcel is Seth, one of the top analysts at the National Security Agency. Red and Liz save Seth, a few moments before his sure-shot death. As part of repaying his debt, Seth provides the classified information about the murder that took place at Angel Station Hotel. In the classified file, Liz finds a picture that has her husband, too. The profile of the murder suspect matches that of Tom.

On the same day, Tom also finds that someone has opened his box. He wants to question Liz on that. Backed by new information, Liz wants to know the truth, without waiting another day. "The Courier" ended on a note of a possible confrontation, with both Tom and Liz having questions for each other. In the next episode, we are likely to hear Tom's explanation or his denial. There is also a possibility that he is being framed and that the box was planted by someone else.

Why did Red choose to help Liz get closer to the truth about Tom? According to him, it is for the "long play in the future."

The mysteries in "The Blacklist" are far more complex than one can imagine. It is just like what Red says in this episode: "circumstances are far more complex than you can imagine."
