'The Blacklist' Spoilers: Tom Keen Hints He And Red Had A Deal, Two Main Antagonists Dead In Season 2, Episode 8 The Decembrist [RECAP Mid-Season Finale]
Fitch is dead. Berlin is dead. Tom exits the scene, without being dead, but he does that only after revealing to the audience that he had a deal with Red. The mid-season finale of "The Blacklist" season 2, "The Decembrist," was packed with a lot of unexpected twists. It did not reveal Red's backstory or how he and Liz are related but it established that Red is the main antagonist of this show. And, the main antagonists do not like competition and they kill those who attack them. Here is what happened in "The Blacklist" Season 2 episode 7, "The Decembrist":
Tom Keen and Liz: The opening scene of the episode reveals how Liz saved Tom's life. The episode opens with the last season finale's scene where Liz shot Tom and told Red that she would kill him. It is revealed that instead of finishing him off, Liz took the injured Tom to the boat and she called up her doctor friend who saved his life. She imprisoned him and kept questioning him about Berlin and Red. In the present time, a member of the coast-guard finds out that Liz is holding someone captive in the boat. And, before Liz could think of a way to handle the situation, Tom kills the coast-guard.
Red finds out that Tom is still alive. The two differ on why Liz is still keeping him alive. Liz says it is because she wanted to get information on Berlin, while Red says, it is because she still loves him. Red wants Liz to make Tom reveal the safe-houses of Berlin. This leads to Agent Ressler finding out that Tom is alive. He questions Liz's rational behind keeping Tom alive. She tells him to treat Tom like a criminal informant just like Red is one. Once, Tom gives her Berlin's address, Liz sets him free. Later, Liz admits to Red that she still has feelings for Tom. In the final moments of the episode, Tom meets Red. Red gives Tom an envelope and tells him to disappear from Liz's life and never to meet her again. Tom leaves but before doing that, he tells Red that he never told Liz about them.
The Decembrist: Seeing his daughter alive, Berlin realises that someone manipulated him. Red wants to know who told him to go after him and what did he tell. Berlin recalls that in 1991, in the erstwhile Soviet Union, a bombing killed his colleagues at a meeting. He was the only one was alive and later was incarcerated. Red was said to be behind the bombing. Later, Berlin was informed that Red has taken his daughter with him and he was the one who was sending him his dead daughter's body parts. It is soon revealed that it is 'the Decembrist' who manipulated Berlin and made him attack Red. The FBI task-force team finds out that the 'the Decembrist' is close to Russia's President Vladamir Putin and part of the government. Liz leaks the identity of 'the Decembrist' to Red. Berlin and his new buddy Red head to Moscow to track down their target. The man reveals that 'the Decembrist' is Fitch, not him, and that he ordered the execution of his plan. The Russian minister, however, does not get to live.
Fitch and Berlin are Killed: Red calls Fitch and tells him that Berlin is heading in his direction, with the intention to kill him. Red reminds Fitch that they had a deal to not target each other. Fitch reveals that the Russian episode pre-dates their deal. He warns Red that he is the one who is stopping 'the Alliance' from killing him and tells him that Berlin is his problem too. Berlin gets Fitch abducted and when the task-force enters the location where he is being kept -- thanks to Tom's information -- they find Fitch wearing a bomb ring around his neck. They move him to the box. Red uses Zoe, Berlin's daughter, to track down Berlin to find out how to deactivate the bomb. Red arrives at the Post Office. However, he is not there to save Fitch's life and tells him that he cannot stop the bomb. Fitch asks him whether he has the 'The Fulcrum'. He also tells Red that his death is going to make the radicals more powerful and the moderates may not be able to do anything. Also, Fitch mentions the year 2017 and indicates that something is going to happen in that year. He reveals to Red the combination of his safe in St. Petersburg, 83044. He wants Red to remember the password and before he could tell Red the address, the bomb puts an end to Fitch's life. Later, Berlin and Red drink from a bottle of vodka to celebrate Fitch's death. Once, the bottle is empty, Red pulls out his gun and kills Berlin.
