Bollywood may have changed, but the actors and actresses still in Indian cinema continue to impart a spell on moviegoers across the world. The legendary Amitabh Bachchan was recently voted the best Bollywood actor by a UK poll, celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema. He made a come back after beginning his career early in his life. Bollywood news watchers say cinema in India is still going strong despite lacklustre sales and dwindling profits in other industries like retail and tourism. Adding to that, a new generation of actors like Abhishek, who is Amitabh's son and his wife Ashwarya have also taken on roles that have changed the face of Bollywood since its first movies were created in the early 1900s.

The film industry in India continues to release more films than anywhere else in the world despite a devalued indian rupee. Economic growth in the country declined to less than 7% in India from an impressive 9% in the wake of the global recession in 2008. As the biggest film industry globally, Bollywood releases 1000 films each year . This is approximately twice as many movies that are produced in Hollywood.

With popular social networking sites like Facebook and search engine providers Google, the Indian audience is connected to Bollywood more than ever, downloading hit songs, movies and sharing insights with a larger Web audience. The industry generated $3 billion in 2011 and is targeted to reach sales of $30 billion a year in 7 years. Film goers, even the poor and the blue-collared workers in India, are willing to spend the extra buck to see their heros on the big screen and take a break from their daily routine.

The Indian film industry celebrated 100 years of Indian cinema in Chennai under the leadership of South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC) earlier this year. On the other side of the globe, Canada pays tribute to the 100 years of Indian cinema at the Troronto International Film Festival. More celebrations are scheduled for September.

Bollywood has come a long way since its first movie "Raja Harishchandra" (a silent film in black and white) was released in 1913. Current films like the recently released "Chennai Express" starring Deepika Padukone and Shahrukh Khan is raking in close to Rs. 1.5 million since its recent debut. Its actors like Shahrukh and Aamir Khan who have propped the face of Bollywood. These are the high-tech audio-visual films of our times that inject poignant storylines into its viewers, leaving harsh commentaries on communal issues, politics and, not to mention, romance, the favourite genre of the Hindi movie. And of course, you can expect and accompaniment of song and dance, that is characteristic of Bollywood.
