The recent Bollywood film Raanjhanaa has captivated Indian cinema goers with lead stars Sonam Kapoor and Dhanush.

This is Tamil actor Dhanush's first Hindhi movie, though you wouldn't say that looking at the Rs 20.08 million reeled in when ithe movie debuted last weekend.

Raanjhanna was released in theatres across the world in mid-June and is presumed to have been made with a budget of Rs 35 million, not a hefty amount for a Bollywood film by Indian standards.

Eros International produced the film and said in a statement, "The total weekend collection of Raanjhanaa in India is Rs 20.08 crore (million)," reports Indo-Asian News Service.

Anand L Rai's Raanjhanaa is a love story of sorts. But which Bollywood story isn't?

There's a twist to this romance though - the two people in love come from different religions. The boy is Hindu while the girl is Muslim, sparking an interreligious relationship outlawed in Indian society.

Nonetheless, it is a common predicament that young Indians fall into in a multiciltural and cosmopolitan setting. Religious fervour is still strong in modern India, and the theme is relevant to today's liberal-minded generation.

Other actors featured in Raanjhanaa are Abhay Deol, Swara Bhaskar and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub. Directed by Anand L Rai, the movie has another surprise element - the music of well known artist, AR Rahman.

The film has also been dubbed in Tamil to tap into Dhanush's popularity and is titled Ambikapathy. This version of the movie is slated for release in the southern state of Tamil Nadu on June 28.

It is estimated to run in approximately in more than 200 theatres. With a report by Indo-Asian News Service.
