Bones Season 9 Episode 2 ("The Cheat in the Retreat") shows a somewhat back-to-normal Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel). Supervillain Pelant (Andrew Leeds) gets a mention, as if to remind viewers the show's not done with him just yet. Sweets (John Francis Daley) is the only one still visibly and strongly affected by Pelant. He makes a decision that will change the dynamics between Jeffersonian and FBI.

[Spoiler Alert] This review contains spoilers for those who have not seen Bones Season 9 Episode 2, "The Cheat in the Retreat." TV.com has this synopsis about the episode:

"A management consultant's body is found, but the crime scene had been contaminated by bobcats. Evidence leads the team to a marriage retreat, so Booth and Brennan don old undercover identities to determine the killer."

Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin) is still being annoying for her uncharacteristic lack of faith in Booth. But the show is even more annoying for not putting an end to the Pelant arc. Will Freddie Prinze Jr be back to help Booth get him? (Freddie will be back, all right, but perhaps for a different reason.)

Squintern of the week is Arastoo Vaziri (Pej Vahdat). His presence helps Cam (Tamara Taylor) deal with a case of stolen identity.

Bones Season 9: When will Christopher Pelant return?

Spoiler reports indicate David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel will get married as Booth and Brennan in Bones Season 9 Episode 6. Viewers will see Christopher Pelant again in Episode 4. An upcoming honeymoon is being hyped, so viewers might be in for some fresh "Bones" adventure.

Meantime, for Bones' Season 9 Episode 2, Brennan and Booth have to be Tony and Roxy again to join a marriage retreat. The two undercover personalities were first seen in Bones Season 2, when Booth and Brennan were still miles away from pursuing a real relationship. Seeing them reprise some undercover roles makes viewers nostalgic. It's good enough for the fans. They couldn't get married yet, but they wind up in a marriage retreat to solve a crime.

The episode's criminals are an old couple, hubby and wife in their retirement age. They have "loved each other for 38 years." After shrugging off and laughingly admitting to their crime, they tell Booth to marry Brennan. (If they only knew about Pelant, they'd finish him with killer momma's billiard ball. Old school vs computers!)

The final scene in which Brennan engages Booth in a love ritual that uses "biological, electrical impulses" is just adorable. This echoes what Brennan said in the season premiere - they are "fine."

The one who's not fine is Sweets. Dr Lance Sweets has to be in a real retreat to regroup. Some viewers hope that he (and/or T.J. Thyne's Jack Hodgins) would be largely instrumental to the capture or killing of Christopher Pelant.

Overall, the episode is a standard "Bones" serving - nothing really special; some odd stuff here and there. But it's a step toward more important things to come. And the not so discreet name drops tell viewers exactly that.
