Boston Explosion: Marathon Tragedy Becomes Grief Shared in Blogs and Social Media [PHOTOS]
The Boston Explosion Monday afternoon claimed at least three lives and wounded at least 120 by-standers, participants, and supporters of the athletes in the event. The twin blasts pulled social media users together as they share their grief and shock. Some posted photos calling for prayers, many others condemned the violence.
The double explosion in Boston took place 100 metres apart, resulting in "a pool of blood" at the dreadful scene. Only moments earlier, the crowd was cheering for the runners in what was supposed to be a jovial event.
The Associated Press has reported an 8-year-old boy is among those who perished in the deadly explosion.
"I've directed the full resources of the federal government to help state and local authorities protect our people, increase security around the United States as necessary, and investigate what happened," U.S. President Barack Obama said in a statement.
"We still do not know who did this or why, and people shouldn't jump to conclusions before we have all the facts," Mr Obama said. "But make no mistake, we will get to the bottom of this. We will find out who did this, we will find out why they did this. Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups, will feel the full weight of justice."
The 8-year-old boy who died at the tragedy was the son of one of the runners. His mother and sister were injured among the spectators.
On Twitter, a photo of a girl is being spread with the caption, "R.I.P to the 8 year old girl who died in Boston's explosions, while running for Sandy Hook kids." There is no confirmation yet as to the veracity of the photo and its caption. But more than 4 thousand Twitter users have re-tweeted the photo, anyway.
(We will update this story as more information is confirmed. The death toll is rising as this feature is being published.)
