Boxing News 2014: Mayweather’s Sept 13 Bout vs Maidana Possibly to be Held in New York

There is a possibility that unbeaten American boxer Floyd Mayweather's Sept 13 rematch with Argentinean boxer Marcos Maidana won't be held in MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The venue could possibly be in New York state as Mayweather Promotions is in the final stage of acquiring a licence from the New York State Athletic Commission.

Only the comptroller's approval is lacking, NYSAC Director Eric Bently said, reported by Mlive.

The likely change in venue is due to Mayweather Promotions cutting off its business ties with Golden Boy Promotions, owned by Oscar de la Hoya, and Money May's refusal to deal with Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions, which would leave the boxer's camp with no promoter's licence in Nevada.

Mayweather broke off with Golden Boy after Richard Schaefer, CEO of the company, resigned from his post.

Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, declined to confirm the next venue of the fight or even Money May's opponent even if Mayweather had unofficially announced at the BET Awards on Sunday that he would have a rematch with Maidana.

Explaining the New York licence application, Ellerbe said, "I have a bunch of fighters, I have to keep them busy, and I have to be in a position to do their fights in a bunch of different state."

There are two possible boxing venues in New York, but Madison Square Garden is already booked for an Eagles concert on Sept 13, leaving the Mayweather camp with Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Mayweather would possibly need a front promoter to fight again in Nevada or his promotions company could secure a promoter's licence which would require the submission of two years income tax returns - a condition that the boxer may be hesitant to do.

Salvador Contursi, manager of Maidana, confirmed that they are negotiating with Mayweather's camp and added that one source of controversy in the May bout is included in their talks.

"The gloves will surely be included in the negotiations as detailed as possible, but we have not even touched that subject. I do not know where the information came from that we got a million and a half dollars for Maidana to use the gloves that he used in the May fight," Contursi told Boxingscene.
