Boxing News 2014: WBC Analysis – 54% Effectivity for Mayweather Punches, 26% for Maidana
Many Argentinean boxing fans were disappointed with the result of the just concluded reunification fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and their compatriot, Marcos Maidana, on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
With Maidana confirming Mayweather's pre-fight comment that he is no pushover, the Argentinean pugilist fought a tightly contested fight that one judge even scored it a draw at 114-114. However, two other judges favoured Money May with scores of 117-111 and 116-112.
While the scores show how close the fight was, the World Boxing Council's analysis of their punches explains why Mayweather won despite sustaining a cut on his right eye in Round 4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGEdaWXuzp4). WBC, in a tweet, explained that Mayweather landed 230 of 426 punches for an effectivity rate of 54 per cent versus 221 if 858 punches for Maidana for an effectivity rate of 26%.
