WBC/WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. of the U.S. speaks to reporters during a media day at the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, Nevada September 2, 2014. Mayweather will face Marcos Maidana of Argentina in a rematch at the MGM Grand Gard
Mayweather, who loves to brag about his riches on social media, is named the highest-paid athlete in the world. Even without endorsements, the unbeaten boxer managed to earn as much as $105 million. He is the only athlete, besides Tiger Woods, to hit the $100 million bracket. Mayweather’s revenue from his bouts against Canelo Alvarez amounting to $200 million and Marcos Maidana (with a guaranteed $32 million purse in May) was enough for him to secure the first place on the list. The clamour for the dream match to happen before Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao retire from professional boxing just got louder when the World Boxing Council (WBC) said on Wednesday that two boxing greats should settle their differences and make the fight happen.

In a statement on its Web site, WBC said, "After Floyd Mayweather clearly defeated Marcos Maidana in their much anticipated rematch, there have been countless news stories, articles and statements in the press regarding the fight that been in the making for several years. Clearly and simply - the world wants to see Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao."

The Mexico-based organisation pointed out that Mayweather, as holder of the WBC welterweight and superwelterweight titles of the world, is the pound-for-pound driving force of boxing, while Pacquiao is a boxing icon who renewed interest in the sport after he lost to Juan Manuel Marquez.

"The WBC has been extremely supportive, and in fact ranked Pacquiao as number one contender in the welterweight division after his comeback victory against Brandon Rios," the WBC added.

The rivalry among the boxing organisations - similar to the "unfriendly" competition between the two pound-for-pound contenders - reared its ugly head when the WBC blamed Pacquiao for the match not taking place, pointing to his decision to go for the welterweight title from rival World Boxing Organisation (WBO).

WBC further said, "With the ranking in the month of December, 2013, Pacquiao was in line to have the fight against Mayweather, but unfortunately his plan was different and he challenged Timothy Bradley, conquering the WBO championship."

The council reiterated its support for the bout if Pacquiao would win over American boxer Chris Algieri in their Nov 22 fight in Macau.

WBC forecast, "Both Mayweather and Pacquiao have great history in the WBC and without doubt their fight would be one of the biggest events in the history of boxing and our sport."
