Boxing News 2015: Canelo Alvarez willing to fight Gennady Golovkin with catchweight condition
Canelo Alvarez of Mexico will face Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico on Nov. 21 later this year. However, he appears to be ready for his next challenge, saying that he’s willing to meet Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan if the latter agrees to a catchweight of 155 pounds.
"If he wants to fight with me, let him come down to 155 [pounds] and I'll fight him whatever day he wants," Alvarez told FightHype.com. "At this moment, my body isn't ready for 160 pounds. Maybe 1 or 2 more years I'll be ready for 160, I don't know, but I'd be delighted to fight someone like Gennady. He's a great fighter and I think it would be a great fight. I'd be delighted to get him in a fight.”
Canelo is deep into training for his fight against Cotto, a match-up considered the biggest in boxing since Floyd Mayweather, Jr defeated Manny Pacquiao last May in the “Fight of the Century”. The winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight will most likely be in line for another big match-up against Golovkin, who beat David Lemieux via a convincing 8th round knockout earlier in October.
Mayweather officially retired from boxing after beating Andre Berto via a 12-round unanimous decision last September. With the former No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter gone, the sport is searching for a new face in boxing and Alvarez and Golovkin appear to be among the frontrunners to take over that honour.
Alvarez is slightly favoured over Cotto in November, but the veteran Puerto Rican is a dangerous fighter owing to his rich experience.
Alvarez has an impressive record of 45-1-1 in his pro career with 32 knockouts and his lone loss came against a close fight against Mayweather in 2013. Golovkin’s record is even more impressive at 34-0-0 with 31 knockouts, but a match-up against Alvarez promises to be an exciting one as both fighters are known for their straightforward and attacking style on the ring.
