Boxing news: Canelo considers Rosado, Monroe Jr. as next opponent in 'easy money' fight
WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has yet to pick an opponent for his voluntary title defense in May, but the Mexican champ is expected to pick “easy money fights” when he steps back in the boxing ring.
According to Dan Ambrose of Boxing News 24, Alvarez will meet with Golden Boy Promotions executives next week to determine his next opponent for the Mexican’s scheduled bout on Cinco de Mayo holiday against an unnamed opponent. Gabriel Rosado and Willie Monroe Jr. appear to be the leading candidates to fight for the WBC middleweight gold as reported by Mike Coppinger of USA Today. However, fighting either of the two mentioned boxers would not prove much for Alvarez.
“Canelo will take a lot of heat from the hardcore boxing community if he selects Rosado or Monroe because those guys are little more than [Gennady] Golovkin’s leftovers and neither of them are worthy of a PPV fight,” Ambrose wrote. “Canelo selecting one of those guys is going to give some fans the impression that he’s just out for easy money fights rather than trying to create a real legacy.”
Prior to his 10-round decision win over over a 38-year-old Joshua Clottey, Rosado (22-9, 14 KOs) has lost four fights against top middleweight fighters. On the other hand, Monroe (19-2, 6 KOs) has won nine of his last 10 bouts, but his recent lost his most recent fight against Gennady Golovkin.
According to Jake Donovan of Boxing Scene, Alvarez is set to headline the first boxing event at the New Las Vegas Arena, although the proposed move by Golden Boy Promotions is still subject to approval of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
“Golden Boy Promotions has placed a hold for Canelo to fight at the new arena on May 7,” NSAC executive director Bob Bennett said. “It will come up at the next hearing, at which time we will vote on whether or not to approve the request.”
There is no doubt that Alvarez is one of the hottest commodities in the boxing sport today which may play a big part in generating interests from fans in his next fight. Unfortunately, against an opponent like Rosado or Monroe, it is hard to see the 20,000-seater arena getting filled with boxing fans around the world.
