Boxing News: De La Hoya guarantees Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez win over Gennady Golovkin
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya strongly believes his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will disappoint Gennady Golovkin as well as the Kazakh’s multitude of fans when the two fighters meet in the boxing ring.
“Canelo is strong, fast, he’s younger than Gennady, and Canelo is getting better in every fight,” De La Hoya said, reports Boxing Scene. “Canelo has the style and the technique to disappoint a lot of Golovkin fans, when they face each other… and they will!”
Alvarez and Golovkin are set to take on voluntary title defences before squaring against each other in September. While De La Hoya seems to be ecstatic about his client facing “GGG,” the “Golden Boy” remained mum about the certainty of a potential superfight in 2016.
The Mexican redhead has been rumoured to face the likes of Gabriel Rosado and Willie Monroe Jr. in what Dan Ambrose of Boxing News 24 described as “easy money” fights. However, with Alvarez set to take on his voluntary title defence on the Cinco de Mayo weekend, his next fight could still earn substantial pay-per-view numbers.
Meanwhile, Alvarez was presented with the WBC middleweight belt he won against Miguel Cotto in November last year in Mexico City. Among those in attendance in WBC’s presenting of Alvarez’s gold and green strap were De La Hoya, the champ’s manager, trainer Eddy Reynoso and Jose Reynoso, as well as the organisation’s president Mauricio Sulaiman.
“I feel very honored to be here today to receive the WBC middleweight world championship belt,” Canelo said, reports Fight News. “I am also very grateful to the WBC for granting me my second division world title; this is a very big step in my career and I am looking forward to my upcoming fight in May.”
