Boxing News: Nonito Donaire Has Heated Moment With Vic Darchinyan at Press Conference; Rocky Martinez vs. Mikey Garcia
Nonito Donaire and Vic Darchinyan re-opened the book of their rivalry with fireworks on Wednesday after the two highly-rated featherweight boxers engaged in feisty word war in their first ever face-to-face confrontation in six years.
The 30-year old Donaire is set to resume his quest of becoming a world champion again since losing to Guillermo Rigondeaux in their Jr. featherweight unification bout last April. And there's no better way to get his boxing career on track than fighting the same boxer that helped catapult him as one of the sport's pound-for-pound stars.
The 37-year old Darchinyan will enter their latest clash with Donaire with a two fight winning streak. He is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Puerto Rican Luis Del Valle and a TKO win over Mexico's Javier Gallo.
After six years of wait, the Australian boxer with Armenian descendants finally got a chance to avenge the most devastating loss of his career at the hands of then unknown up and coming fighter in Donaire.
Darchinyan, who saw his 28-fight winning streak ended with a powerful left hook by Donaire in the fifth round of their title clash in 2007, promises everyone in the press conference room to avenge his loss by destroying the Filipino boxer.
"Six years ago I lost to Nonito Donaire. Nobody knew about him then. I made him, I'm gonna break him," said Darchinyan, who captured the Super Flyweight right after losing to the Filipino.
As expected, Donaire did not back off from the word of war and made a bold prediction to win over Darchinyan for the second time.
'I make him, I break him,' I expect as much from Darchinyan. I thought age would subside a little bit of hatred, but apparently not. For that 6 years, I've taken everything away from him, everything he has worked for all his life, so that's why I look forward to this fight."
"If you say you will destroy me, I say likewise. I will destroy you ten-fold," Donaire said in the press conference.
According to reports, the two fighters almost got into each other after exchanging feisty words. Looks like no love lost between these two ring gladiators, eh?
Also serving as co-feature bout is the WBO junior lightweight clash between champion Roman 'Rocky' Martinez and former WBO featherweight clash Mikey Garcia.
Donaire vs. Darchinyan/ Martinez vs. Garcia fights are scheduled on Nov. 9 in Houston, Texas.
