Gennady Golovkin’s team has confirmed that the undefeated Kazakh, who currently holds the IBF, IBO, and WBA middleweight belts, will fight WBC middleweight champ Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in the second half of 2016, most likely in September.

“The fight will most likely take place second half of 2016. Both will have fights in early 2016 and then fight each other in the second half of the year,” a representative of Team Golovkin told TMZ Sports.

The WBC gave Alvarez another extension to negotiate with mandatory challenger Golovkin for the middleweight belt. The statement released by the governing body indicated that Alvarez, as well as “GGG,” will be allowed to take on a voluntary a voluntary title defence in May 2016.

The extension means Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) and Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) are almost certain to take on each other in the boxing ring, although the purse-split and stipulations would be factors in the negotiations. Alvarez has been insistent that his mandatory title defence would be in a catchweight-stipulated match, particularly at 155, while Golovkin wants the fight at the full middleweight limit of 160 pounds.

Alvarez is believed to be scheduled to fight in May and September next year, two major Mexican holiday weekends. With a potential Canelo-Golovkin superfight most likely set for September, the undefeated Kazakh is bound to face other top middleweight fighters like Daniel Jacobs or the winner between Andy Lee and Billy Joe Saunders' match in March or April, according to K2 Promotions managing director Tom Loeffler, who told the LA Times that they “prefer to unify” all the middleweight belts.

Meanwhile, Alvarez seems to be leaning towards a May fight against British boxer Amir Khan. According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya, he would not mind seeing Alvarez go against the Bolton welterweight.

“I wouldn’t mind seeing that,” De La Hoya told K.O. Artist Sports. “I think Amir Khan vs Canelo would be very interesting.”
