Boxing News: WBC Announces Mandatory Fights For Each Division, WBC President Encourages Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Fight
The World Boxing Council (WBC) has announced the respective mandatory challengers in various boxing weight divisions. The boxing organisation made the announcement during the WBC’s 52nd annual convention where a record turnout was realised.
Some noteworthy pairings in the said announcement are Bermane Stiverne vs. Deontay Wilder (heavyweights) with the winner becoming the mandatory challenger. Others include Gennady Golovkin vs. Martin Murray (middleweights) winner for the victor of the probable Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Alvarez bout, Danny Garcia to make a voluntary defence as no. 1 contender Viktor Postol, who will make way for other fights after a step-aside fee and Rocky Juarez vs. Robinson Castellanos (featherweights) winner to battle title-holder Jhonny Gonzales.
In the lower weight divisions, Ramon Gonzales is allowed to make a voluntary defence as Nawaphon Sor Rungvisai face Edgar Sosa (flyweights) for the mandatory challenger tag. Wanheng Menayothin will make a voluntary defence as well and will take on the winner of the Carlos Ortega vs. Denver Cuello eliminator. In the most-followed boxing division, the junior middleweight and welterweight weight class, WBC President Maurico Sulaiman stated that he wants to see the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao clash and that no mandatory challenge bouts will be held in 2015.
Meanwhile, the said event drew a record number of participants and Sulaiman was ecstatic with the turnout. Over 2,000 people attended the event and graced by the presence of former and current world boxing champions.
"It has been a great gathering of the WBC Family. To have broken the Guinness record of Champions (112) in one room. To have had the WBC up in Space (at the Russian Space Station), to have created the WBC Amateur Program, to have a new anti doping protocol, a prevention of mismatches. And many fights mandated for a great year, is very important and we'll have a very busy 2015,” Sulaiman said via the organisation’s official website.
