Brisbane infrastructure to need federal funding
Damaged infrastructure in Brisbane should have federal government support to help Queensland’s struggling property industry.
“If the Federal Government does not provide funding, Brisbane City Council would have no option but to defer projects and pass the reconstruction cost on," said Property Council of Australia Queensland Division Executive Director Kathy Mac Dermott. “This would be disastrous for the local economy generally, and the property industry particularly."
“Anything that slows the rebuild will slow our economic recovery. Furthermore, rebuilding damaged infrastructure is a critical step in restoring investor confidence in Brisbane."
“If the Council is left to pick up the tab, the property industry and Mum and Dad property owners would wear the brunt of the impact though property related taxes such as rates and infrastructure charges," he added. “It would be a double-whammy for an industry reeling from a challenging 2010. "
