The Airport Monitoring Report 2012-13 is out and the report says all the four airports - Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney are profitable but Brisbane is the only airport to have improved the quality of service while Sydney is ranked the lowest among the four.

According to the report prepared by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, more investment will be needed if the airports have to address the problems of congestion and prepare for an increase in traffic in the future.

All the four airports have reported a growth in revenues and profits. There is also an increase in both the domestic travellers as well as the international travellers. According to the report there are continuing signs of congestion in spite of the recent investments in the airports.

Among the four airports, Brisbane was the only one with a rating of "good" while the other three remained at the rating of "satisfactory." This is not to say that the airport is without its share of problems.

The runway capacity remains to be a major cause for concern at the Brisbane airport. There will be a new runway constructed at the airport but the congestion may continue till the new runway is constructed by 2020.

Sydney Airport, according to the report, is facing a situation of increased demand which is met with low investments; this may have contributed to the low quality of service rating it received. The airport has witnessed the highest number of passengers and revenue among the four airports.

More than 37 million passengers travelled through the Sydney Airport generating over AU $587 million in revenue. Melbourne Airport ranks second in terms of numbers with 30 million travellers using the airport and generating AU $280 million in revenue. Brisbane Airport had over 21 million passengers and AU $227 million in revenue and Perth saw more than 14 million passengers and AU $160 million in revenue.

While Brisbane Airport may enjoy a better rating the report also points out the challenges at the Sydney Airport. Sydney Airport has a legislated cap of 80 aircraft movements per hour and a curfew between 11 pm and 6 am. The report also highlights the fact that many studies have recommended building of a second airport at Sydney.
