Broken Hill Not Apocalyptic Enough For Mad Max
Filming of Mad Max Moves From Broken Hill to Namibia
Australian cinema suffered a blow as it was revealed that the latest installment of Mad Max, titled "Fury Road", would no longer be filmed in Broken Point, New South Wales, as had been intended. The fourth film of the franchise will again be helmed by Australian George Miller, who has been responsible for the previous three "Mad Max" films.
The film has suffered many setbacks, starting back in 2003 when they originally intended on beginning filming in Namibia only to be foiled by the war in Iraq. A lease was then taken out for the production at Broken Hill Studios in 2009. Before filming could commence, some unseasonal weather made the areas desolate landscape plush and green.
It may be a backhanded compliment to the area, but the producers deemed that it no longer had the post-apocalyptic look that they sought for the film.
The production now intends to begin filming in Namibia in March 2012, once Miller and his team are finished on their latest project, "Happy Feet 2". It is thought that the film's crew will still be largely Australian. Tom Hardy will take on Mel Gibson's role with Charlize Theron set to star also.
