Spoiler alert: This recap contains plot details about season 4 of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” The fourth season premiered Sept. 20. The series is available for Australian viewers to watch on SBS every Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.

Jake and Rosa face 15 years in prison for a crime they did not commit. The two are out on bail, but Hawkins (Gina Gershon) still has a strong case against them. It also doesn’t help that the lieutenant is one of the NYPD’s most esteemed law enforcement officers.

Jake and Rosa have strong alibis for the three other Golden Gang robberies they are accused of. Also, the defence is confident enough that the opposition can’t trace back the money that Jake has supposedly stolen. Unfortunately for the pair, Hawkins smashes their alibis with cleverly made up backstories and documents. She even puts money into Jake’s bank account.

Charles (Joe Lo Truglio) is so stressed out of losing his best friend Jake to jail that all of his hair turns white. He and Terry (Terry Crews) meet up with a hacker and ask him to trace back the sources of the money that showed up on Jake’s account. But the hacker has difficulty with the task, so he enlists the help of two others to do the job.

Jake discovers that an officer named Matthew Langdon (Brent Briscoe) disappeared shortly after joining Hawkins’ squad. Amy (Melissa Fumero) and Jake find his location and ask him to testify against the lieutenant. After initially declining, Langdon agrees to go to court against Hawkins.

Rosa decides to leave for Argentina, where her fiancé is waiting for her. Holt (Andre Braugher) asks her to stay and prove that she’s innocent. The captain tells her that the Nine-Nine is her family and that the squad will miss her when she flees, but Rosa insists she has made up her mind. She later arrives at the hearing, and says she isn’t ready to say goodbye to her family.

The hackers find out that Langdon’s place is one of the sources of Jake’s money. Terry tells Amy about the new information, but they are unable to stop the testimony of Langdon, who apparently still works for Hawkins. He testifies against Jake and lauds the lieutenant, calling her the most honourable cop he has ever worked with. Afterwards, the jurors find Jake and Rosa guilty on all charges.
